One Woman Was Killed and Four People Hospitalized After a Five Vehicle Chain Reaction Crash Shut Down I 75 in Franklin Tuesday Morning
Ohio State Highway Patrol says the crash began in a left-center lane and closed the interstate for hours.
FRANKLIN, OH — One woman died and four other people were hospitalized after a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 75 that shut down the highway for hours Tuesday morning. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the wreck happened around 6 a.m. as troopers responded to a report of a multivehicle crash.
Investigators said five vehicles were traveling south in the left-center lane when the collision unfolded. The driver of a Chevrolet Trax had gotten out of the vehicle for reasons that were not explained in the initial report, and a 2017 Honda Civic slowed and stopped behind it before being struck.
Investigators’ Account
According to the patrol, a 2018 Ford Edge hit the Civic and pushed it into the stopped Trax. That impact struck the Trax driver, who was outside the vehicle, before the Trax hit a GMC Yukon. The Civic then rotated in the roadway and was hit by a 2010 Ford E-150.
The patrol said the Civic was then pushed into the concrete median barrier, while the E-150 continued forward and struck the Trax and the Yukon. The driver of the Civic, identified as 59-year-old Karen White of Miamisburg, died at the scene. The crash is being investigated by the Lebanon Post.
What The Patrol Said
The patrol said the driver of the Yukon and a passenger were taken by ambulance to Kettering Health Middletown with serious injuries. The Trax driver was taken first to Atrium Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries and then moved to Miami Valley Hospital for more treatment.
The driver of the Ford Edge was also taken to Atrium Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford E-150 was not injured, according to the patrol. Officials have not said whether any citations or charges are expected.
Road Shutdown And Review
The interstate remained closed for multiple hours before reopening around noon, according to the patrol. The crash blocked a major commuter route through the Cincinnati area and left investigators sorting out the sequence of impacts and the reasons the Trax driver got out of the vehicle.
At this stage, the patrol has only released a preliminary account. It has not said whether speed, distraction, or another factor contributed to the wreck, and no further findings were announced in the initial report.
